the shuohuang (shouzhou-huanghua) railway is the second-largest conduit for west-to-east coal transportation in china. large-scale operation of 20,000-ton heavy-haul freight trains has been carried out along the rail line for seven years, with the maximum annual transport volume exceeding 360 million tons. the growing transport volume and regular operation of heavy-haul freight trains posed new challenges for the traditional infrastructure operation and maintenance mode. to enhance the integrated, intelligent operation and maintenance of heavy-haul railway infrastructure, the project was approved and launched as one of the top 10 scientific and technological innovation projects of chn energy in 2020.

“after three years of independent research and development, we established an air-space-vehicle-ground integrated infrastructure testing and monitoring system through the use of intelligent sensing technologies such as uavs, robot automatic patrolling, online monitoring, beidou satellite positioning, and ai recognition, creating an enterprise-level smart brain platform capable of data sharing and interconnection, deep learning, intelligent analysis and other functions,” said the manager of the science and technology department of shuohuang railway co., ltd. “it can conduct integrated, smart management of the operational data of engineering, electric and supplying equipment, effectively mending the deficiencies of traditional operation and maintenance mode.”


the staff use the smart operation and maintenance system to monitor production data.

it is reported that the smart brain platform has incorporated 19 existing business systems, developed more than 130 intelligent algorithms, and constructed 15 evaluation and prediction models. it can provide nearly 800 functions to meet the needs of user management and production work along the shuohuang railway. the preliminary application results prove that the technology can enhance infrastructure equipment checking and repairing efficiency by more than 30% and equipment operation quality by more than 20%, reduce equipment maintenance costs by more than 15%, and increase the lifespan of key components such as the circuits, overhead contact system, and communication signal devices by more than 15%.
